Come celebrate the start of summer by visiting the South Carolina State Library’s new Summer Reading art gallery, on display till July 31! This gallery contains original art by eight award-winning children’s authors and illustrators, including Denise Fleming, Peter Brown, Marc Brown, Bryan Collier, David Diaz, Brian Lies, and John Rocco. Most of the artwork was commissioned to celebrate StoryfestSC, an annual event meant to boost children’s literacy. Want to see the gallery? In this episode of LibraryVoicesSC, Dr. Curtis Rogers discusses South Carolina in the Civil War and Reconstruction Eras: Essays from the Proceedings of the South Carolina Association with Dr. Fritz Hamer. South Carolina in the Civil War and Reconstruction Eras is an anthology of the most enduring and important scholarly articles about the Civil War and Reconstruction era published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association.

The goals of SC Plants the Seed are to promote early literacy and lifelong learning, to increase awareness about locally farmed produce, to provide lower income and rural populations the chance to buy healthier foods, and to educate residents about safe food preparation and storage.

Join us June 1 for our next author talk and book signing: South Carolina in the Civil War and Reconstruction Eras: Essays from the Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association by Michael Bonner and Fritz Hamer.

Bonner and Hamer, past officers of the South Carolina Historical Association, selected twenty-three essays to create this treasure trove of scholarship. The authors will discuss race, politics, military events, and social issues during the Speaker @ The Center session.
