Students can win up to $100 in the Letters About Literature writing contest!

Each year the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress in partnership with affiliate state centers for the book, invites readers in grades 4-12 to enter Letters About Literature, a national reading-writing contest. To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre—fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic, explaining how that author’s work changed the student’s way of thinking about the world or themselves. Students can win up to $100!

Tapping Into Your Roots: A Genealogy Event for All Ages

The Berkeley County Library System (BCLS) is excited to partner with the General Marion’s Brigade Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and the Colonel Hezekiah Maham Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) to bring you “Tapping into Your Roots,” a genealogy research event and celebration for all ages. This event will be held at the Moncks Corner Train Depot on Saturday, October 7th, from 10 am – 2 pm.

Dyslexia and Libraries in South Carolina

The International Dyslexia Association of SC (IDA-SC) has a mission--a mission to supply every public library in SC with books and information about dyslexia.   The project was inspired by Youth Services Librarians Laura Rogers and Emily Johansson in the Richland County library who began a Reading Studio outreach to parents--stocking a section of the children’s room with materials that parents could use to help their children with reading and conducting workshops on dyslexia and reading difficulties. 

Threads: Gathering My Thoughts...Honoring South Carolina's Textile History

The textile industry had an enormous impact on South Carolina.  From the late nineteenth century through most of the twentieth century, the textile industry dominated the state’s manufacturing.  In the SC State Library’s exhibit “Threads: Gathering My Thoughts” historical images are used to honor South Carolina’s rich textile legacy and teach how the textile industry shaped cultures, demographics and economics in our state.
