The South Carolina State Library is pleased to announce the selection of the most notable South Carolina state government documents of 2008. The selection is announced annually on or near Freedom of Information Day, March 16, the birthday of President James Madison, an early proponent of citizen access to government information.

In celebration of National Library Week, April 12-18, 2009, you can take a moment to share how you have benefited from using the library.

 

Personal stories can make a difference in funding for public libraries statewide and ensure that every citizen has access to quality resources and information.

The South Carolina Academy of Authors will celebrate writers Kwame Dawes, Susan Ludvigson, and Carrie Allen McCray Nickens, inducting the three into the state’s literary hall of fame on April 25, 2009. The three will be honored in the April ceremony in Columbia.

This edition's podcast includes: American Library Association (ALA) and the South Carolina Library Association (SCLA) laud President Barack Obama for noting how libraries assist Americans during the president’s recent address to Congress; Institute of Museum and Library Services

The Library Services Department of the State Library will be offering short classes on a variety of library resources.  These classes are designed to introduce state employees to selected library resources and as continuing education for public and academic librarians in reference service.  Classes meet in the Computer Training Room of the State Library at 1500 Senate Street in Columbia.

The Dorchester County Library in St. George and in Summerville will be offering a variety of educational and entertaining programs on gardening this spring. 

 

The Secret Garden Party will take place on March 21 at both branches from 11:00 to 1:00pm.  This program, for school-aged children, includes crafts, snacks and indoor gardening activities. Space is limited and registration begins March 9.  

The 14th annual Patchwork Tales Storytelling Festival will be held March 19-21 at the Baxter Hood Center at York Technical College in Rock Hill. The 3-day festival is hosted by the York County Library and includes storytelling, music, and workshops artists for adults, teens, and children.

It’s Read-In 2009 and you’re invited!  The 2009 Read-In, a statewide celebration of reading, will be held at the State House in Columbia on Thursday, April 16, 2009.

 

This exciting event will provide an opportunity for students, librarians, parents and other literacy supporters to demonstrate the importance of reading and the need for library services in our communities.
