South Carolina Center for the Book Announces 2009 Award Recipients

The South Carolina State Library’s Center for the Book proudly announces the recipients of the 2009 South Carolina Center for the Book Awards for Writing, Teaching and Literary Arts Advocacy.  This year’s award winners are noted South Carolina author Leonard Todd, for Writing (Carolina Clay: The Life and Legend of the Slave Potter, Dave); Libby Collins of Dent Middle School in Columbia, for Teaching; and the Free Times, for Literary Arts Advocacy.
 

South Carolina Big Read Grant Recipients Announced

The Institute of Museum and Library Service (IMLS) in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) awarded Big Read grants to 269 arts, culture, and science organizations, libraries, and municipalities on June 23. Five selected South Carolina libraries and organizations will use the grants to host Big Read celebrations that bring communities together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 30 selections from U.S.

SC Museums Libraries and Archives Selected to Receive IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf

Dr. Anne-Imelda Radice, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), recently announced that 907 U.S. museums, libraries, and archives have been selected to receive the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf.   Of the 907, 13 are located in South Carolina.
 
Radice made the announcement during her opening remarks at the fourth and concluding Connecting to Collections forum, Stewardship of America's Legacy: Answering the Call to Action in Buffalo, NY.

SC Student Qualifies for National Braille Challenge Finals

Brianna Murray, a 10th grade violin major at The Charleston School of the Arts, has qualified for the National Braille Challenge Finals in Los Angeles, California.  She is the only student in South Carolina to ever make it to the Braille Finals and this is her third time qualifying.
 
This year, Brianna qualified through South Carolina’s First Annual Regional Braille Challenge, held in Columbia in February, at the South Carolina State Library.

SC First Novel Prize Winner Brian Ray to be Speaker at the Center

On Thursday, June 25, 2009, from noon to 1:00 p.m., 2009 South Carolina First Novel Prize Winner Brian Ray will discuss his novel Through the Pale Door at the South Carolina State Library as part of the South Carolina Center for the Book's Speaker @ the Center series.
 
Ray will also appear at IF ART Gallery at 1223 Lincoln Street in the Vista on Wednesday, June 24 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
