National Library Week Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Communities across the country will celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries, librarians and library workers by offering special programs and services during National Library Week, April 13-19.
 
This year, National Library Week marks its 50th anniversary with the theme “Join the circle of knowledge @ your library®.” All types of libraries—school, public, academic and special—participate.

Smithsonian Exhibition Explores the Diverse Food Traditions of America

Museums in Elloree, Belton, Lake City, Johnston, and Edisto Island, in cooperation with the Humanities Council SC, will host the local showing of Key Ingredients: America by Food, a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition which delves into the historical, regional and social traditions that merge in everyday meals and celebrations of the American table.
The exhibition will be on view beginning in Elloree at the Heritage Museum and Cultu

Celebrate National Poetry Month at the South Carolina Center for the Book

On Thursday April 24, 2008 from noon to 1:00 p.m., the South Carolina Center for the Book located at the South Carolina State Library will host Susan Meyers, Ray McManus and Ed Madden, winners of the South Carolina Poetry Book Prize. A major poet selects one poet per year to receive this award, which began in 2006 and is sponsored by the South Carolina Poetry Initiative and the University of South Carolina Press.

Librarians Help Celebrate National Library Week in South Carolina

During National Library Week 2008 on the days of April 14-16, South Carolina Library Staff members will take a wide range of photographs of librarians working, researching, teaching, and doing all that librarians do in a given day.
 
Library staff members from any type of library are encouraged to be creative in taking photos that capture the essence of South Carolina librarianship and are visually attractive.

State Library Promotes Literary Arts Via YouTube

Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Center for the Book, located at the South Carolina State Library recently hosted a book discussion as part of its Speaker @ the Center series which highlights South Carolina authors and literary-related lectures.
Sheila Morris, South Carolina resident and author of “Deep in the Heart” discussed her latest book in conjunction with National Women’s History Month.

State Library Receives Cheers for Innovation

In the recent edition of Library Journal (3/15/2008), notable authors, librarians, and proponents of the transparent library movement, Michael Casey and Dr. Michael Stephens look back over the last year and review some important trends in libraries.
These trends center around the Web/Library 2.0 movement and concentrate on adaptability and innovation.  According to Casey and Stephens, “The transparent library contains three key elements: open communication, adapting to change, and scanning the horizon.”
 

SC Librarian Selected to Serve on National Board

Senate Confirms President's Nominees to National Museum and Library Services Board - The U.S. Senate confirmed four presidential nominees to serve as members of the National Museum and Library Services Board March 13, 2008. The board advises the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an independent federal agency that is the primary source of federal support for the nation's museums and libraries.
