State Library Offers New Service to State Government

As a service to State Government Employees, the State Library now offers a new Online Programming Tool (OPT) through the use of its OPAL room for staff development and training.
 
The State Library’s OPAL (Online Programming for All Libraries) room allows up to 25 simultaneous users, includes VOIP, text chat, and co-browsing.  Users install a safe and simple to use plug in called tcConference.  State Government employees may use the library's OPT in one to two hour increments.

State Library Urges Families to Enroll Children in Summer Reading Programs

The South Carolina State Library Board of Trustees and State Librarian, David Goble, are encouraging all children and teens in South Carolina to participate in the statewide free summer reading programs, Catch the Reading Bug and Metamorphosis @ Your Library.  “The ability to read is essential.  South Carolina is competing with other states to establish itself in the growing information economy,” State Librarian, David Goble said.

Dr. Nancy Zimmerman named AASL 2008 Distinguished Service Award recipient

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to announce Dr. Nancy P. Zimmerman as the recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Service Award.  Zimmerman, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs of The Graduate School and an associate professor in the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina, will receive the award at the AASL Awards Luncheon during the 2008 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim.

Author Bert Goolsby to be May Speaker at the Center

On Thursday, May 22, 2008, from noon to 1:00 p.m., the South Carolina Center for the Book located at the South Carolina State Library will host Bert Goolsby, author of Harpers’ Joy.  “John Grisham meets Andy Griffith a legal thriller packed with humor, heart, and a healthy dose of Southern charm.” Candle Reid's life is falling apart. He's a lawyer whose competence is compromised by alcoholism. His wife kicks him out, and then his law partner dies. Can things get any worse?
