Teen Read Week 2018: Reading Can Be Out Of This World

The 2018 event will be held Oct. 7 - 13, featuring the theme "It's Written in the Stars: READ." Library staff, afterschool providers and educators can use this theme to encourage teens to think and read outside of the box, as well as seek out fantasy, science fiction and other out-of- this-world reads.  Join the conversation on Twitter with #TRW18. Teen Read Week™ is a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). It began in 1998 and is held annually in October the same week as Columbus Day.

Therapy Dog Joins SCSL Staff to Promote Tail Waggin’ Tutors Program

A lady with a book is a powerful thing, a lady with a book AND a dog is unstoppable.  The South Carolina State Library is excited to welcome Katie to our staff.  Katie is a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International.  She serves the community visiting hospitals, nursing homes, schools and libraries!  Katie’s handler, Ellen Dunn, is the Public Information Coordinator for the South Carolina State Library.  The two are committed to helping libraries start and grow a Tail Waggin’ Tutors program where young people read to and with therapy dogs.  The progr

State Library to Offer Pathways to Grade-Level Literacy Webinar

Literacy 2030's focus for 2018-2019 is on grade-level literacy (Kindergarten-Grade 5). This webinar, held on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., describes the trajectory of reading development from birth through age 8. Dr. Janice Gruendel and Keller Anne Ruble with the Institute for Child Success will describe key influences of Community Supports, High Quality Learning Environments, and Out of School Time and their impact on reading success.
