Calhoun County Library to Unveil Observation Bee Hive

The Calhoun County Library will be hosting a special “Hive Warming Party” in celebration of housing the 189th installed bee hive given by The Bee Cause Project. The project seeks to stimulate curiosity in young people about the natural world by giving them an intimate experience with one of the world’s greatest pollinators. The program includes artwork presentations from County schools, a “Bee Dance” choreographed by Jean Reid and speeches delivered by key personnel.

Laurens County Library Celebrates 75 Years of Bookmobile Services

As part of National Library Week the Laurens County Public Library System will celebrate 75 years of Bookmobile/Outreach services on Friday, April 15, 2016, from 3-5 PM at the Laurens County library.  The public is invited to attend.

When most Laurens County residents think of the Library, they think of two locations:  the Laurens County Library’s West Main Street building, which opened in 1989 and the Clinton Public Library which operates in a storefront of the College Station Shopping Center on the Jacobs Highway and has for quite some time.

An evening with Ha Jin, National Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize Finalist

Join us for an evening with Ha Jin, National Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize Finalist, on April 28, 2016, from 6pm-8pm at the SC State Museum. Jin sets many of his stories and novels in China, in the fictional Muji City. He has won the National Book Award for Fiction and the PEN/Faulkner Award for his novel, Waiting (1999). He has received three Pushcart Prizes for fiction and a Kenyon Review Prize. Many of his short stories have appeared in The Best American Short Stories anthologies.

Understanding Our Rivers Programs Offered at Lexington County Library

Last October our state experienced record amounts of rainfall and widespread flooding. While our local rivers provide us with vast recreational and economic opportunities, it is important to understand their natural history. With this in mind, the Lexington County Library is hosting a book-to-action project — Understanding Our Rivers — centered around the book My Paddle to the Sea by John Lane. Throughout April, we’ll present programs for both children and adults that focus on the important role trees play in protecting our watersheds.

PALMCOP Hands-On Disaster Recovery Workshop

Every collection is susceptible to damage from water – whether from floods, hurricanes, burst pipes, or from structural leaks. This hands-on workshop will give participants information regarding salvage of affected collections and experience in recovery of waterlogged materials. This workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at the Clemson University Libraries’ Depot (offsite facility), Clemson Research Park, 103 Clemson Research Blvd., Anderson, SC 29625, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Speaker @ the Center to Feature Sonya Grantham

Join us on Thursday, March 24, 2016, from noon to 1:00 p.m. at the SC State Library for Speaker @ the Center featuring Sonya Grantham, author of Reflections of the Original Frogtown Community: Our Community Legacy Across the Miles. Many of the descendants of Frogtown have a history to share about their community that was once considered dead. Reflections is the first written documentation on this community and gives a rich history of the town and its citizens.
